Trine Ellitsgaard is a Danish textile artist who has lived and worked in Mexico for 35 years. In her lauded Agave Collection, exclusively available through Blackman Cruz, she weaves the culture of Oaxaca into her limited-edition pieces inspired by the land and the Mesoamerican culture that surrounds her.
Ellistsgaard’s creations are sustainable pieces of art made from detritus produced by the booming Oaxacan Mezcal industry. Mezcal is an ancient intoxicant made from the heart of the Espadín agave plant. The leaves are often left to rot disrupting the fragile ecosystem. With her innovative creative spirit and a desire to highlight the problem, Ellistgaard figured out a way to extract fiber from the Espadín leaves. The fibers are spun by hand, dyed in small-batches using plant based dyes and woven in the Zapotec village of Teotitlán del Valle in Oaxaca, which has a long tradition of making hand-loomed textiles. Since each textile is uniquely hand crafted, the result is a one-of-a-kind creation that brings the traditions of the past into the future.
