18th C Sicilian Baroque Mirror

Sicily, Italy

18th Century

Original mirror, traces of gilding on metal
102"H X 54" W X 16" D

Purchased in Venice, Italy in 1963 on a buying trip by antique dealer Edward Holler while traveling with Michael Taylor, Leo Dennis and Jerry Leen. Under Taylor's supervision Hollard built a pavilion to accommodate the proportions of this spectacular mirror.

Although the mirror was found in a private collection in Venice, it is most likely not Venetian. The metal work and motifs are identical to those found in Sicilian Baroque palaces and churches of the 1700s while under Spanish rule and influence.

Most likely the mirror was extracted from Sicily during the tumultuous years following the Italian Unification by Garibaldi in the late 19th C as was the case for many pieces.
